Calcixen 

Presentation: Film-coated tablets containing Calcium Carbonate (from Coral source) and Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), available in strengths of 500 mg elemental Calcium with 200 IU Vitamin D3, and 600 mg elemental Calcium with 400 IU Vitamin D3. Available in strips. Manufactured by Everest Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate USP (Coral source) equivalent to elemental Calcium (500 mg or 600 mg) and Vitamin D3 USP (200 IU or 400 IU as Cholecalciferol).

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, tetany, and hypoparathyroidism. Also used as a supplement in case of inadequate intake of Calcium in childhood diet, pregnancy and lactation, and in elderly patients. Other indications include pancreatitis and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Calcixen (500 mg Calcium + 200 IU Vitamin D3): One tablet twice daily with meals or as directed by a physician.
  • Calcixen DX (600 mg Calcium + 400 IU Vitamin D3): One tablet once or twice daily with meals or as directed by a physician.

Side Effects: Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and can cause constipation. Other possible side effects include allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, hypervitaminosis D, and hypersensitivity to any of the components. Caution should be exercised in patients with mild hypercalciuria, mild to moderate renal impairment, and a history of renal stones. Monitor plasma and serum calcium levels in long-term use and in patients with renal impairment. May interact with tetracycline and fluoride preparations (allow 3 hours between doses), thiazide diuretics, phenytoin, barbiturates, and glucocorticoids. Certain foods like spinach, cereals, and milk products may reduce calcium uptake.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
