Beuflox: A Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic for Various Infections

Beuflox is a powerful quinolone antibiotic indicated for treating a wide range of bacterial infections. It's effective against single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms, and can even be used for infections resistant to other common antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins.

How Beuflox Works (Pharmacology)

Beuflox contains Ciprofloxacin, a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with a broad spectrum of activity. It works by interfering with the bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase, which is essential for bacterial DNA synthesis. This action leads to the bactericidal (bacteria-killing) effect of Ciprofloxacin.

Ciprofloxacin is well-absorbed after oral administration and widely distributed throughout the body's tissues and fluids. It's active against most Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, including common culprits like Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It also shows activity against Gram-positive aerobic bacteria, including some penicillinase-producing and methicillin-resistant staphylococci.

Key Indications & Benefits

Beuflox is prescribed for various bacterial infections, including:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Both lower and upper tract infections.
  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Including those affecting the upper and lower respiratory systems.
  • Gonorrhea: A single-dose treatment option.
  • Cystic Fibrosis: For pseudomonal infections of the lower respiratory tract in adults.
  • Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Bone and Joint Infections
  • Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections
  • Acute Sinusitis
  • Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis

Always consult a registered physician for medication use.

Dosage & Administration

The dosage of Beuflox is individualized based on the severity and type of infection, the causative organism's sensitivity, and the patient's age, weight, and kidney function.

General Adult Dosage Range: 100-750 mg twice daily.

Specific Dosage Examples:

  • UTIs: 250-500 mg twice daily (or 1000 mg extended-release tablet once daily for uncomplicated acute cystitis for 3 days).
  • Respiratory Tract Infections: 250-500 mg twice daily; for Streptococcus pneumonia infection, 750 mg twice daily.
  • Gonorrhea: Single dose of 250 or 500 mg.
  • Most Other Infections: 500-750 mg twice daily.
  • Cystic Fibrosis (adults): 750 mg twice daily.

IV Infusion: For more severe or complicated infections, Beuflox can be administered via intravenous infusion, with doses ranging from 200 mg to 400 mg, typically every 8 or 12 hours, depending on the infection type.

Special Populations:

  • Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment (reducing total daily dose by half) is usually only required in severe cases (serum creatinine >265 micromol/L or creatinine clearance <20 ml/minute).
  • Elderly: No dosage adjustment is typically necessary.
  • Adolescents & Children: Use is generally not recommended due to potential arthropathy in immature animals. However, if the benefit outweighs the risk, a dosage of 7.5-15 mg/kg/day in two divided doses may be considered.

Duration of Treatment: Usually 5 to 10 days for acute infections, continuing for three days after symptoms resolve. Longer courses are required for certain infections (e.g., bone and joint infections).

Important Considerations & Warnings

Please discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Beuflox, as it can interact with other medications and may not be suitable for certain conditions.

Contraindications: Do not use if you have a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.

Potential Interactions:

  • Avoid concurrent use with: Magnesium or Aluminum-containing antacids, sucralfate, or products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc. Take these products two hours after or six hours before Beuflox.
  • Dairy Products: Do not take concurrently with milk or other dairy products alone, as this can significantly reduce Beuflox absorption. Dietary calcium as part of a meal typically does not affect absorption.

Common Side Effects: Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain), and central nervous system effects (headache, dizziness, tiredness, confusion). Less common side effects include joint pain, mild photosensitivity, and transient increases in liver enzymes. There's a risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Use with caution in patients with known or suspected CNS disorders (e.g., arteriosclerosis, epilepsy) or other factors predisposing to seizures.
  • Drink fluids liberally while taking Beuflox.
  • Pregnancy & Lactation: Not recommended during pregnancy or for nursing mothers, as Ciprofloxacin has shown to cause joint problems in immature animals and is secreted in milk.

Storage

Keep Beuflox below 30°C temperature, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Remember: Always use this medicine strictly as prescribed by a registered physician.
