Betaloc 25: Targeted Support for Heart Health

Betaloc 25 is a prescription medication primarily used to manage various cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina pectoris (chest pain). It's also effective in controlling certain cardiac arrhythmias and offers supportive treatment for hyperthyroidism. In cases of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), early intervention with Betaloc can help reduce damage and improve patient outcomes.

How Betaloc Works (Pharmacology)

Betaloc contains Metoprolol, a selective beta-1 blocker. This means it primarily targets the beta-1 receptors in the heart.By doing so, Metaloc reduces the effects of stress hormones (catecholamines) on the heart. This action helps to:

  • Lower heart rate
  • Decrease cardiac output
  • Reduce the heart's contractility
  • Lower blood pressure

Unlike some other beta-blockers, Metoprolol has a reduced impact on insulin release and carbohydrate metabolism, making it a suitable option for many patients.

Key Indications & Benefits

  • Hypertension Management: Helps to lower and control high blood pressure.
  • Angina Pectoris Relief: Reduces the frequency and severity of chest pain.
  • Cardiac Arrhythmia Control: Especially effective for supraventricular tachyarrhythmias.
  • Hyperthyroidism Adjunct: Provides supportive relief for symptoms associated with an overactive thyroid.
  • Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack): Early use can limit infarct size, reduce ventricular fibrillation incidence, alleviate pain, and improve survival rates.

Always consult a registered physician for medication use.

Dosage & Administration

Betaloc 25 is available in film-coated tablets, extended-release tablets, and for IV injection, with specific dosing based on the condition being treated. Your doctor will determine the appropriate form and dosage for you.

General Dosage Guidelines (Always follow your doctor's specific instructions):

  • Hypertension (Film-coated tablet): Typically starts at 100 mg daily (as a single or divided dose), adjustable up to 400 mg.
  • Angina (Film-coated tablet): Usually 50 mg to 100 mg two or three times daily.
  • Cardiac Arrhythmias (Film-coated tablet): Often 50 mg two or three times daily, with a maximum of 300 mg daily.
  • Hyperthyroidism (Film-coated tablet): Usually 50 mg four times a day, with dose reduction as the thyroid condition improves.
  • Myocardial Infarction (Oral): Follows initial IV treatment, typically 50 mg every 6 hours for 48 hours, then a maintenance dose of 200 mg daily.
  • Extended-release tablets are typically taken once daily for hypertension and angina.
  • IV Injection is used for acute situations like arrhythmias and early myocardial infarction intervention.

Special Populations: Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with significant hepatic (liver) dysfunction.

Important Considerations & Warnings

It's vital to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before starting Betaloc, as it can interact with other medications and may not be suitable for certain conditions.

Contraindications: Do not use if you have AV block, uncontrolled heart failure, severe bradycardia (very slow heart rate), sick sinus syndrome, cardiogenic shock, severe peripheral arterial disease, or known hypersensitivity to Metoprolol or other beta-blockers.Also contraindicated in myocardial infarction complicated by significant bradycardia, first-degree heart block, systolic hypotension (<100mmHg), or severe heart failure.

Potential Interactions:

  • Catecholamine-depleting drugs (e.g., Reserpine, MAO inhibitors): May increase sedative effects.
  • CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., quinidine, fluoxetine, paroxetine): Can increase Metoprolol levels, potentially reducing its cardioselectivity.
  • Digitalis glycosides: Increased risk of slow heart rate.
  • Clonidine: May exacerbate rebound hypertension if clonidine is withdrawn.
  • Calcium Channel Blockers: Use with caution due to potential heart effects.

Common Side Effects: Tiredness, dizziness, depression, diarrhea, itching, shortness of breath, slow heart rate, and headache. Less common side effects include mental confusion, nightmares, nausea, dry mouth, and blurred vision.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Bronchospastic Diseases (e.g., asthma): Use with caution.
  • Major Surgery: Discuss with your doctor if you are undergoing surgery.
  • Diabetes: Beta-blockers can mask some signs of low blood sugar.
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease: May worsen symptoms of arterial insufficiency.
  • Pregnancy Category C: Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; caution is advised for nursing women.

Storage

Store Betaloc in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
