Betafix tablet is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, angina, and moderate to severe heart failure. It is not recommended for the emergency treatment of hypertensive crises.
Bisoprolol Fumarate, the active ingredient in Betafix, is a highly selective ß1 blocker. It works by blocking ß1 adrenergic receptors in the heart and vascular smooth muscle, which reduces heart rate and cardiac output, thereby lowering blood pressure. Unlike some other beta-blockers, Bisoprolol does not negatively affect cholesterol levels in long-term therapy. Its predictable absorption and elimination half-life of 10-12 hours make it suitable for a once-daily dose.
Betafix should not be combined with other ß-blocking agents. Patients on catecholamine-depleting drugs (e.g., reserpine) should be monitored closely. Co-administration with certain centrally active antihypertensive agents (like clonidine) or antiarrhythmic agents (like disopyramide) requires careful management. The combined use of Betafix with certain calcium channel blockers can lead to severe hypotension and other cardiac issues.
Do not use Betafix if you have cardiogenic shock, overt heart failure, second or third-degree A-V block, right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension, or sinus bradycardia.
Possible side effects include fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Patients may also experience cold extremities, muscle weakness, or cramps. In some individuals with asthma or COPD, it may cause breathing difficulties due to narrowed airways.
Betafix should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Small amounts of the drug may be excreted in breast milk. If use is considered essential, mothers should stop nursing.
Use caution when adjusting the dose in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function. Patients with a history of severe allergic reactions may be more sensitive to allergens while taking beta-blockers and may not respond to standard epinephrine treatment.
