Ben-A (Albendazole): A Broad-Spectrum Anthelmintic

Ben-A contains Albendazole, a benzimidazole anthelmintic that is effective against most nematodes and some cestodes. It is used to treat single and mixed infestations of various worms, including hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, and tapeworm. Albendazole exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity.

How Ben-A Works (Pharmacology)

Albendazole's primary mechanism is based on disrupting parasite metabolism:

  • Inhibits Tubulin Polymerization: It inhibits tubulin polymerization in the parasites, leading to the loss of cytoplasmic microtubules.
  • Blocks Glucose Uptake: This action blocks glucose uptake, depleting the parasite's energy and leading to its immobilization and death.
  • Metabolism: Albendazole is poorly absorbed from the gut but is rapidly metabolized in the liver to an active form, albendazole sulphoxide, which has a half-life of about 8.5 hours.

Key Indications & Benefits

Ben-A is indicated for the treatment of infestations with:

  • Hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, and whipworm.
  • Strongyloides and tapeworm.
  • Hydatid disease (Echinococcosis).
  • Giardiasis.

Dosage & Administration

Dosage varies by the type of infestation and the patient's age.

  • Adults and Children over 2 years: A single dose of 400 mg for common worm infections. For strongyloidiasis or taeniasis, 400 mg daily for 3 days.
  • Children 1-2 years: A single dose of 200 mg.
  • Hydatid disease: High doses (up to 800 mg daily) are used for extended cycles under medical supervision.
