Beklo: Relieving Spasticity and Muscle Spasms

Beklo is a prescription medication designed to help manage spasticity and muscle spasms caused by various neurological conditions. It effectively reduces muscle rigidity, involuntary movements (clonus), and associated pain, helping to improve mobility and comfort for adults and children.

What Beklo Treats

Beklo is indicated for individuals experiencing muscle spasticity due to:

  • Multiple Sclerosis: Easing the stiffness and spasms often associated with MS.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries & Diseases: Providing relief from muscle rigidity and pain.
  • Cerebrovascular Accidents (Stroke): Helping manage post-stroke spasticity.
  • Rheumatic Disorders: Reducing skeletal muscle spasms.
  • Neoplastic or Degenerative Brain Disease: Alleviating spasticity symptoms.

Always consult a registered physician for medication use.

How Beklo Works (Pharmacology)

Beklo, containing Baclofen, works by acting on the central nervous system, specifically at the spinal cord level. It stimulates GABA-B receptors, which are crucial for reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate. This action effectively inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes, leading to muscle relaxation and reduced spasticity. Baclofen also contributes to pain relief (antinociceptive effect).

Dosage & Administration

Beklo dosage is carefully tailored and gradually increased to find the most effective amount with minimal side effects.

  • Adults & Children over 10 years: Typically start with 5 mg three times daily, taken with or after food. The dose can be gradually increased, up to a maximum of 100 mg daily.
  • Children under 10 years: Treatment usually begins with 2.5 mg (2.5 ml liquid form) four times daily, with the daily maintenance dose adjusted based on age:
    • 12 months - 2 years: 10-20 mg (10-20 ml)
    • 2 years - 6 years: 20-30 mg (20-30 ml)
    • 6 years - 10 years: 30-60 mg (30-60 ml)

Always consult a registered physician for medication use.

Important Considerations & Warnings

It's crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before starting Beklo, as it can interact with other medications and may not be suitable for certain conditions.

Potential Interactions:

  • Increased sedation and risk of respiratory depression when taken with CNS depressants, alcohol, or synthetic opiates.
  • May increase the effect of antihypertensives, potentially leading to a greater fall in blood pressure.
  • Can potentiate effects with tricyclic antidepressants, leading to pronounced muscle weakness.
  • May cause mental confusion, hallucinations, and other side effects when combined with levodopa and carbidopa in Parkinson's patients.
  • Increased CNS depressant effects with MAO inhibitors.

Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, daytime sedation, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue. Other potential side effects can affect the central nervous system (headache, insomnia, confusion), cardiovascular system (low blood pressure), gastrointestinal system (nausea, constipation), and genitourinary system.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Kidney Impairment: Lower doses are required for patients with impaired kidney function.
  • Psychotic Disorders/Epilepsy: Use with caution and close monitoring, as it may exacerbate these conditions or lower the seizure threshold.
  • Underlying Conditions: Use cautiously in patients with a history of peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or hepatic, renal, or respiratory failure.
  • Bladder Function: May improve bladder emptying but can cause acute urinary retention in patients with pre-existing sphincter hypertonia.
  • Pregnancy & Lactation: Use only if the potential benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk, generally without expected adverse effects on infants.

Storage

Store Beklo below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
