Antazol Plus is a nasal spray containing a combination of two active ingredients:

• Sodium Cromoglicate BP: 2.6 mg per metered spray
• Xylometazoline Hydrochloride BP: 0.0325 mg per metered spray

It is manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Indications:

Antazol Plus is indicated for the prophylaxis (prevention) and treatment of allergic rhinitis, such as:

• Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
• Perennial rhinitis (year-round allergic rhinitis)

It is used when allergic rhinitis is accompanied by nasal congestion.

Pharmacology:

• Sodium Cromoglicate: This drug acts locally on the nasal mucosa. It prevents the release of mediators of type-I allergic reactions (including histamine) from sensitized mast cells after an antigen-antibody reaction. It does not inhibit the binding of IgE to the antigen but suppresses the release of substances in response to this reaction. It also has a lesser inhibitory effect on type III allergic reactions.
• Xylometazoline Hydrochloride: This is a sympathomimetic agent with alpha-adrenergic activity. It causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) in the nasal passages, which reduces nasal congestion and allows easier breathing through the nose.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults (including the elderly) and children: One spray into each nostril four times daily.

Contraindications:

• Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the preparation.

Precautions:

• Prolonged use or abuse of decongestants in general may lead to rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) or drug-induced rhinitis.
• Caution should be exercised during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, as with all medicines.

Side Effects:  

• No serious side effects have been reported.  
• Occasional irritation of the nasal mucosa may occur during the first day of use.  
• In rare cases with Sodium Cromoglicate solutions alone, wheezing and tightness of the chest have been reported.
• Because Antazol Plus contains a lower dose of Xylometazoline, it may cause mild side effects such as nasal irritation, dryness of the nose, sneezing, headache, insomnia, drowsiness, and palpitations.  

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:  

• As with all medicines, caution should be exercised during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.  

Storage:

• Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
• Protect from light and moisture.
• Keep out of reach of children.
