Afrin 0.05% nasal solution or spray contains oxymetazoline hydrochlorideas the active ingredient at a concentration of 0.05% w/v. Â
Indications:
Afrin (oxymetazoline) is a nasal decongestant used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion and stuffiness caused by: Â
- Common cold Â
- Hay fever and other allergies Â
- Sinusitis
It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages, which helps to reduce swelling and congestion, making it easier to breathe through the nose. Â
Dosage for Adults and Children 6 years and older:
- The usual dose is 2 or 3 sprays or drops in each nostril every 10 to 12 hours. Â
- Do not use more than 2 doses in any 24-hour period. Â
- Do not use for more than 3 daysunless directed by a doctor.Frequent or prolonged use may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen (rebound congestion). Â
How to Use:
- Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils.
- For drops: Tilt your head back while sitting or lying down. Hold the dropper over the affected nostril and apply the directed number of drops. Keep your head tilted for a few minutes. Repeatin the other nostril if needed. Â
- For spray:Keep your head upright. Insert the spray tip into the open nostril, and while you breathe in through your nose, squeeze the bottle firmly and quickly to release the spray. Sniff deeply to ensure the medication goes deep into the nose. Repeat in the other nostril if needed. Do not tilt your head backward while spraying. Â
- Wipe the nozzle of the spray bottle or dropper tip with a clean tissue after each use and replace the cap. Â
- To prevent the spread of infection, the container should be used by one person only. Â
Important Considerations:
- Do not use for more than 3 days.Frequent or prolonged use may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen (rebound congestion). If this occurs, stop using the medication and consult a doctor.
- Consult a doctor before use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, or trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland. Â
- Temporary discomfort such as burning, stinging, sneezing, or an increase in nasal discharge may occur. Â
- Keep this medication out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Temporary burning or stinging in the nose or throat Â
- Dryness of the nasal passages Â
- Sneezing Â
- Runny nose Â
Less common side effects can include headache, dizziness, nervousness, or trouble sleeping. If these persist or worsen, contact a doctor.
When to Seek Medical Advice:
- If symptoms worsen or last for more than 3 days.
- If you develop a fever.
- If there are signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing). Â
