Afrin 0.025% nasal solution or spray contains oxymetazoline hydrochlorideas the active ingredient. This concentration (0.025%) is typically used for children aged 2 to under 6 years. There is also an Afrin 0.05% concentration which is generally for adults and children 6 years and older.
Indications:
Afrin (oxymetazoline) is a nasal decongestant used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion and stuffiness caused by:Â
- Common coldÂ
- Hay fever and other allergiesÂ
- Sinusitis
It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages, which helps to reduce swelling and congestion, making it easier to breathe through the nose.Â
Dosage for Children (2 to under 6 years):
- The typical dose is 2 or 3 drops of the 0.025% solution or 2 or 3 sprays of the 0.025% spray in each nostril every 10 to 12 hours.
- Do not use more than 2 doses in any 24-hour period.Â
- Use only the recommended amount.Â
- This product should be used with adult supervision.
- For children under 2 years of age, consult a doctor.
How to Use:
- Gently blow the nose to clear the nostrils.
- For drops: Tilt the child's head back while sitting or lying down. Hold the dropper over the affected nostril and apply the directed number of drops. Keep the head tilted for a few minutes.Repeat in the other nostril if needed.
- For spray: Have the child keep their head upright. Insert the spray tip into the open nostril, and while they breathe in through their nose, squeeze the bottle firmly to release the spray. Sniff hard a few times to make sure the medication reaches deep into the nose. Repeat in the other nostril if needed.
- Wipe the nozzle of the spray bottle with a clean tissue after each use and replace the cap.Â
- To prevent the spread of infection, the container should be used by one person only.Â
Important Considerations:
- Do not use for more than 3 days.Frequent or prolonged use may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen (rebound congestion). If this occurs, stop using the medication and consult a doctor.
- Consult a doctor before use if the child has heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, or diabetes.
- Temporary discomfort such as burning, stinging, sneezing, or an increase in nasal discharge may occur.Â
- Keep this medication out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
