A Flox Powder For Suspension - (125mg/5ml)

Presentation:

  • Each 5 ml of reconstituted suspension contains Flucloxacillin Sodium equivalent to 125 mg of Flucloxacillin.  
  • Available in bottles containing powder for reconstitution to [mention typical bottle size based on search results, e.g., 100 ml] suspension.  

Indications:

  • Treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms, including penicillinase-producing staphylococci.  
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: boils, abscesses, carbuncles, infected skin conditions (e.g., ulcer, eczema, acne, furunculosis, cellulitis, infected wounds, infected burns,otitis media and externa, impetigo).  
  • Respiratory tract infections: pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, quinsy.  
  • Other infections:osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia caused by A Flox-sensitive organisms.  
  • Prophylactic agent during major surgical procedures where appropriate (e.g., cardiothoracic and orthopedic surgery).  

Dosage and Administration:

  • Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal.  
  • Dosage depends on the age, weight, renal function of the patient, as well as the severity of the infection.
  • Adults:250 mg four times daily. Dosage may be doubled in severe infections. In osteomyelitis and endocarditis, up to 8 gm daily is used in 6-8 hourly divided doses.
  • Children (2-10 years):Half of the adult dose. 
  • Children (Under 2 years): Quarter of the adult dose.
  • For severe renal failure (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min), dose reduction or extension of the dosing interval may be considered.

Pharmacology:

  • Flucloxacillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits the formation of the bacterial cell wall. It is an isoxazolyl penicillin, combining resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase, stability in gastric acid, and activity against Gram-positive bacteria.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, and other minor gastrointestinal disturbances.
  • Reports have indicated occurrences of rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, and cholestatic jaundice.

Precautions:  

  • A Flox should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.
  • Caution should also be exercised in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis.  
  • Use with caution in severe renal failure; dose adjustment may be needed.

Contraindications:

  • Flucloxacillin is contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • A Flox is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects.
  • Caution should be exercised during breastfeeding as Flucloxacillin can be excreted in breast milk.  

Storage:

  • Keep in a dry place away from light and heat.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Reconstituted solution should be stored in a refrigerator (2°C - 8°C) and used within 7 days.

Therapeutic Class:

  • Penicillinase-resistant penicillins.
