Thyzol 5

Presentation: Each tablet contains Thiamazole (Methimazole) 5 mg. Available in strips.

Indications: Thyzol is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) in conditions such as Graves' disease and toxic multinodular goiter, especially when surgery or radioactive iodine therapy are not suitable options. It is also used to manage hyperthyroidism symptoms in preparation for thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy and may be used intermittently after radioactive iodine treatment. In some instances, it's used prophylactically in patients with a history of hyperthyroidism who need to undergo procedures involving iodine-containing substances.

Dosage and Administration: The initial dosage for adults with hyperthyroidism typically ranges from 15 mg to 60 mg daily, divided into 3 doses taken at approximately 8-hour intervals. For mild hyperthyroidism, the starting dose is usually 15 mg per day; for moderately severe cases, it's 30 to 40 mg per day; and for severe hyperthyroidism, it's 60 mg per day.

The maintenance dosage is usually 5 to 15 mg daily.

The dosage for children is typically based on body weight, with an initial dose of 0.4 mg/kg daily, divided into three doses every 8 hours. The maintenance dose is usually half of the initial dose.

Thyzol tablets are taken orally. Follow your doctor's instructions precisely on how much and how often to take this medicine. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it at the same time each day is advisable for consistent results.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Thyzol may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Mild skin rash
  • Itching
  • Joint pain
  • Hair loss
  • Tingling or pricking sensation

Less common but potentially serious side effects include:

  • Agranulocytosis (a severe decrease in white blood cells, leading to increased risk of infection) - symptoms may include fever, sore throat, and mouth ulcers.
  • Liver problems - symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, and abdominal pain.
  • Allergic reactions - symptoms may include skin rash, hives, itching, and swelling.

It is important to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms, especially fever, sore throat, signs of liver problems, or severe skin reactions.

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies, especially to thiamazole or other anti-thyroid medications.
  • Use with caution in patients with liver disease or kidney disease.
  • Thyzol can cross the placenta and may cause harm to the fetus, particularly if given in high doses during the first trimester. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Thiazole (Methimazole) passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medication.
  • Thyzol may interact with other medications, including blood thinners (anticoagulants), beta-blockers, digoxin, and theophylline. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking this medication.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
