Thyrox 25 

Presentation: Thyrox 25 Tablet, available in Bangladesh, contains Levothyroxine Sodium 25 mcg .   
It is usually presented as a small, round tablet with a specific color (often orange) and may have markings or a score line depending on the manufacturer. It is typically available in blister packs or bottles containing a specific number of tablets (e.g., 100 tablets per pack).

Indications: Thyrox is indicated as replacement therapy for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It helps to restore normal thyroid hormone levels in the body, which are essential for regulating metabolism and energy. Thyrox 25 may also be used in the management of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) and as part of a treatment plan for certain types of thyroid cancer.  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Thyrox must be individualized based on the patient's age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely.

• Thyrox 25 is usually taken once daily , preferably in the morning on an empty stomach , at least 30 minutes to one hour before breakfast. This is to ensure optimal absorption of the medication.
• Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet.  
• Consistent timing of the dose each day is important for maintaining stable hormone levels.  
• Your doctor will monitor your thyroid hormone levels with regular blood tests (TSH, T4) and adjust your dosage as needed to achieve and maintain the correct hormonal balance.  
• It may take several weeks for the full effects of Thyrox to be noticeable. Do not stop taking the medication or change the dose without consulting your doctor.  

Side Effects: Side effects of Thyrox are usually minimal when the correct dosage is taken. However, if the dose is too high, it can lead to symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), such as:

• Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)  
• Weight loss  
• Increased appetite  
• Heat intolerance  
• Excessive sweating  
• Nervousness, anxiety, irritability  
• Tremors (shaking)  
• Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)  
• Diarrhea  

Less common side effects may include hair loss (usually temporary), changes in menstrual periods, and muscle weakness. If you experience any of these or other unusual symptoms, inform your doctor promptly.

Precautions: Thyrox is contraindicated in patients with:

• Known allergy to levothyroxine sodium or any of the tablet's ingredients.  
• Untreated hyperthyroidism.
• Recent myocardial infarction (heart attack).  
• Unstable angina (chest pain).

Caution should be exercised in patients with:

• Heart disease (such as angina, coronary artery disease).  
• High blood pressure.
• Diabetes mellitus (as it may affect blood sugar control).  
• Osteoporosis (long-term use may decrease bone mineral density).  
• Adrenal insufficiency.  

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as some can interact with levothyroxine. Certain medications, such as antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, calcium and iron supplements, and some cholesterol-lowering drugs, can interfere with the absorption of Thyrox and should be taken several hours apart.  

Storage: Store Thyrox 25 tablets below 25°C or 30°C (refer to the specific product packaging for the exact storage temperature). Keep the tablets in their original packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use the medication after the expiry date stated on the pack. If the tablets show any signs of discoloration or deterioration, do not use them.
