Thyrox 100

Presentation: Each tablet contains 100 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium. 

Indications: Thyrox 100 is indicated as replacement therapy in hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It is used to treat congenital or acquired hypothyroidism in adults and children. It may also be used to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the management of certain thyroid disorders, including goiter and thyroid cancer.  

Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for adults may range from 25 to 100 micrograms once daily, preferably taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before the first meal of the day with a full glass of water. The dosage is adjusted by the doctor based on individual needs and thyroid function test results (TSH levels). The dose may be increased gradually every 2-4 weeks until a euthyroid state is achieved. For children, the dosage is based on body weight. It is important to take Thyrox 100 at the same time each day. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Certain medications and supplements (e.g., antacids, calcium, iron) can interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine and should be taken at least 4 hours apart.

Side Effects: Side effects are usually a sign of taking too much medication. Common side effects may include palpitations, increased heart rate, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, tremor, sweating, weight loss, increased appetite, diarrhea, and heat intolerance. Less common but serious side effects include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and in rare cases, thyroid storm.

Precautions: Thyrox 100 is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or any of the excipients, acute myocardial infarction, and untreated adrenal insufficiency. Caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and in elderly patients as they may be more sensitive to the effects of thyroid hormone. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the dose may need to be adjusted, and regular monitoring of thyroid function is essential. Levothyroxine should not be used for weight loss in individuals with normal thyroid function.

Storage: Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if the tablet color has changed.
