Tamen Syrup is a brand name for a syrup containing Paracetamol as its active ingredient, with a strength of 120mg/5ml. It is typically available in bottles of 60ml or 100ml.

Indications:

Tamen Syrup is used for the relief of mild to moderate pain and fever in conditions such as:

• Common cold and influenza
• Headache
• Toothache
• Neuralgia
• Rheumatic disorders
• Dysmenorrhoea
• Earache
• General aches and pains
• Pain due to trauma
• Post-immunization fever and pain in children

Pharmacology:

Paracetamol acts as an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It is thought to work primarily in the central nervous system by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, chemicals involved in pain and fever. It has weak anti-inflammatory activity.

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Tamen Syrup depends on the child's age and weight. Typical recommendations are:

• Children under 3 months: 10 mg/kg body weight (reduce to 5 mg/kg if jaundiced) 3 to 4 times daily.
• Children 3 months to below 1 year: ½ to 1 teaspoonful (2.5 - 5 ml) 3 to 4 times daily.
• Children 1-5 years: 1 - 2 teaspoonfuls (5 - 10 ml) 3 to 4 times daily.
• Children 6-12 years: 2 - 4 teaspoonfuls (10 - 20 ml) 3 to 4 times daily.
• Adults: 4-8 teaspoonfuls (20-40 ml) 3 to 4 times daily.

Shake the bottle well before each use. Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours, and leave at least 4 hours between doses. Do not give this medicine to a child for more than 3 days without speaking to a doctor or pharmacist.  

Side Effects:

Side effects of paracetamol at recommended doses are usually mild and rare. However, some individuals may experience:

• Allergic reactions (skin rash, itching)
• Blood disorders (rare)

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
• Caution is advised in chronic alcohol users.
• Avoid using other paracetamol-containing products concurrently.
• Inform your doctor if your child has any serious underlying medical conditions.

Contraindications:

Tamen Syrup is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any other components of the preparation and in patients with severe hepatic dysfunction.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:

Paracetamol is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used at recommended doses for a short duration. However, it's always best to consult a doctor before using any medication during these times.

Drug Interactions:

Patients who have taken barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, and alcohol may show a diminished ability to metabolize large doses of paracetamol. Caution is advised if paracetamol is administered concomitantly with flucloxacillin due to an increased risk of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA), particularly in patients with certain risk factors.  

Storage:

Store in a dry place away from light and heat, below 30°C. Keep out of the reach of children.
