Serontin is a brand name for a medication containing Ethosuximide.Â
It is available as a syrup with a strength of 250 mg per 5 ml.Serontin is manufactured by ACI Pharmaceuticals Ltd.in Bangladesh.
Indications:
Serontin is indicated for the control of absence seizures (also known as petit mal epilepsy).
Pharmacology:
Ethosuximide suppresses the paroxysmal spike and wave pattern associated with lapses of consciousness that are common in absence seizures. It reduces the frequency of these attacks by depressing the motor cortex and raising the threshold of the central nervous system to convulsive stimuli. It is considered more specific for pure absence seizures compared to other succinimide anticonvulsants.
Dosage and Administration:
Serontin syrup is administered orally. The dosage is individualized according to the patient's response.
Serontin may be administered with or without food.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, and weight loss. Less frequent side effects include headache, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, hiccup, ataxia, mild euphoria, irritability, aggression, and impaired concentration. Rarely, it may cause tongue swelling, sleep disturbances, night terrors, depression, psychosis, photophobia, dyskinesia, increased libido, vaginal bleeding, myopia, and gingival hypertrophy.
Precautions:
Ethosuximide should be used with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment. It may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for hazardous tasks, so patients should be cautioned accordingly. Abrupt withdrawal should be avoided. Patients should be monitored for signs of suicidal ideation and behaviors.
Contraindications:
Serontin should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to succinimides (e.g., methosuximide, phenosuximide) or any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions:
The plasma concentrations of ethosuximide may be reduced by carbamazepine, primidone, phenobarbitone, and lamotrigine and increased by12 isoniazid. Phenytoin levels may be increased by concomitant ethosuximide.13
