Rufecta Oral Solution contains Rupatadine Fumarate 5 mg per 5 ml. It is manufactured by Biopharma Limited. 

Indications:

Rufecta Oral Solution is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of:

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in children aged 2 to 11 years.
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round allergies) in children aged 2 to 11 years.
  • Urticaria (hives) in children aged 2 to 11 years. 

Pharmacology:

Rupatadine is a long-acting, non-sedative antihistamine that selectively blocks peripheral H1 receptors.It also antagonizes the platelet-activating factor (PAF), both of which contribute to allergic and inflammatory processes. 

Dosage and Administration:

Children aged 2 to 11 years:

  • Children weighing 25 kg or more:5 ml (5 mg of rupatadine) of the oral solution once daily, with or without food. 
  • Children weighing equal or more than 10 kg to less than 25 kg:2.5 ml (2.5 mg of rupatadine) of the oral solution once daily, with or without food. 

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to rupatadine or any of the excipients. 

 

Side Effects:

Common:

  • Drowsiness 

Uncommon:

  • Increased appetite
  • Irritability
  • Nasal dryness
  • Malaise

Pregnancy and Lactation:

The safety of Rupatadine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.

Precautions and Warnings:

Rufecta Oral Solution should be used with caution in children with:

  • Known prolongation of the QT interval. 
  • Uncorrected hypokalemia. 
  • Ongoing proarrhythmic conditions. 
  • Impaired kidney or liver function (use is currently not recommended due to lack of clinical experience). 

Drug Interactions:

  • The concomitant administration of rupatadine with ketoconazole or erythromycin (CYP3A4 inhibitors) increases systemic exposure to rupatadine and should be used with caution. 
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should not be taken simultaneously with rupatadine as they can increase the levels of rupatadine in the body. 

Storage Conditions:

Store in a cool and dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
