Revistar Syrup contains Flucloxacillin Sodium at a concentration of 125mg/5ml. It is typically available in a 100ml bottle.

Indications:

Revistar (Flucloxacillin) is an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including those that produce penicillinase (an enzyme that can inactivate some penicillins). These infections include:  

• Skin and soft tissue infections:Boils, abscesses, carbuncles, infected skin conditions (e.g., ulcer, eczema, acne, furunculosis, cellulitis, infected wounds, infected burns,otitis media and externa, impetigo).  
• Respiratory tract infections: Pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, quinsy.  
• Other infections causedby Flucloxacillin-sensitive organisms such as osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, and septicemia.  
• As a prophylactic agent during major surgical procedures where appropriate (e.g., cardiothoracic and orthopedic surgery).

Pharmacology:

Flucloxacillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits the formation of the bacterial cell wall by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis. It is resistant to breakdown by many bacterial enzymes (penicillinases), making it effective against some bacteria that are resistant to other penicillins. It is active against Gram-positive bacteria but has limited activity against Gram-negative bacilli.

Dosage and Administration:

Oral doses of Revistar Syrup should be administered 1 hour before meals for optimal absorption.

• Children (2-10 years): Half of the adult dose.
• Children (Under 2 years): Quarter of the adult dose.

The typical adult oral dosage for Flucloxacillin is 250 mg four times daily, which may be doubled in severe infections. For specific conditions like osteomyelitis and endocarditis, higher doses (up to 8 gm daily in divided doses every 6-8 hours) may be used.

Side Effects:

Common side effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Dyspepsia
• Other mild gastrointestinal disturbances

Less common side effects can include rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, and cholestatic jaundice.

Precautions:

• Revistar is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to penicillins.
• Use with caution in individuals with hepatic impairment or a history of allergic reactions.
• Inform your doctor about any other medications your child is taking, as Flucloxacillin can interact with some drugs.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Flucloxacillin is classified as Pregnancy Category B by the US FDA. It should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Flucloxacillin can pass into breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to a breastfeeding mother. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are breastfeeding.
