Indications

• Conditions Treated: Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, hay fever, and urticaria (hives).

• Symptoms Relieved: Sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy skin, and red/watery eyes.

Key Features & Pharmacology

• Class: Non-sedating antihistamine (H1 receptor blocker).

• Mechanism: High affinity for H1 receptors without binding to muscarinic, dopaminergic, or other receptors.

• Metabolism & Excretion: Does not require metabolism to be active; excreted unchanged via feces (~66%) and urine (~28%).

Recommended Dosage & Administration

Must be taken on an empty stomach with water. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

• Adults & Adolescents (12+ years): 20 mg tablet once daily.

• Children (6–11 years): 10 mg mouth-dissolving tablet once daily (dissolves in saliva or 1 tsp of water).

• Children (2–11 years): 4 mL oral solution once daily.

• Children Under 2 years: Not recommended.

Safety, Precautions & Interactions

• Common Side Effects: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, and rare drowsiness (similar frequency to placebo).

• Pregnancy & Lactation: Preferable to avoid during pregnancy; consult a doctor regarding breastfeeding.

• Renal & Liver Impairment: No dose adjustment necessary.

• Interactions: Blood levels increase with ketoconazole, erythromycin, or diltiazem, but safety remains intact. Does not increase drowsiness when combined with alcohol or lorazepam.

• Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to Bilastine or its ingredients.
