Norestin 5

Presentation: Norestin 5 Tablet contains Norethisterone BP 5 mg as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is presented as a tablet for oral administration and is typically available in blister packs.

Indications: Norestin is indicated for the management of various gynecological conditions related to hormonal imbalance and menstrual disorders, including:

  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (metropathia haemorrhagica).
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • Postponement of menstruation.
  • Endometriosis.
  • Menorrhagia.

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen that mimics the effects of natural progesterone, helping to regulate the menstrual cycle and treat these specific conditions.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Norestin varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual patient's response. The tablets are for oral use. Typical dosage regimens include:

  • Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding: 1 tablet three times daily for 10 days.
  • Premenstrual Syndrome: Usually 2-3 tablets daily during the luteal phase (e.g., from day 19 to 26 of the cycle).
  • Postponement of Menstruation: 1 tablet three times daily, starting 3 days before the expected onset of menstruation, for a maximum of 10-14 days.
  • Endometriosis: Initial dosage is often 2 tablets daily, starting on the 5th day of the cycle, and may be adjusted.
  • Menorrhagia: 1 tablet two to three times daily from day 19 to 26 of the menstrual cycle.

It is essential to follow the specific dosage instructions provided by your healthcare professional.

Side Effects: Common side effects associated with Norestin may include changes in menstrual bleeding patterns (such as spotting or breakthrough bleeding), amenorrhea, fluid retention, weight changes, headache, and nausea. Less common side effects can include visual disturbances and hypersensitivity reactions. There is a general consideration regarding a potential increased risk of thromboembolic events with progestogen-only preparations, especially in individuals with pre-existing risk factors.

Precautions: Norestin is contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women, individuals with severe liver disease, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, porphyria, a history of jaundice during pregnancy, and those with known hypersensitivity to norethisterone or any of its components. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of thromboembolic disorders, severe diabetes with vascular complications, sickle cell anemia, severe hypertension, epilepsy, migraine, or conditions that may be exacerbated by fluid retention. A thorough medical history should be taken before starting treatment.

Storage: Store Norestin 5 tablets below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
