Nofiate 200 is a capsule containing 200 mg of Fenofibrate (micronized). It is manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications:

Nofiate is indicated for the treatment of hyperlipidemias (high levels of fats in the blood) of type IIa, IIb, III, IV, and V in patients who have not responded adequately to diet and other appropriate measures. These conditions include high cholesterol and/or high triglycerides.

Pharmacology:

Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative. It is rapidly converted in the body to its active form, fenofibric acid. Fenofibric acid lowers total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides, and VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein). It also increases HDL ("good") cholesterol. Fenofibrate also helps to lower uric acid levels in the blood by increasing its excretion in the urine. The micronized form of fenofibrate in Nofiate is better absorbed by the body compared to non-micronized formulations.

Dosage and Administration:

The usual dose is one 200 mg capsule once daily.

  • Dosage should be individualized according to the patient's response.
  • Nofiate should be taken with meals, as food increases the absorption of the medication.
  • Patients should be on a cholesterol and triglyceride-lowering diet before starting Nofiate and should continue this diet during treatment.

Contraindications:

Nofiate is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Hypersensitivity (allergy) to fenofibrate.
  • Severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Existing gallbladder disease.
  • Breastfeeding mothers.
  • Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight) to ketoprofen.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, anorexia (loss of appetite), and stomach pain.
  • Pruritus (itching) and urticaria (hives).
  • Impotence.
  • Headache, dizziness, vertigo (spinning sensation), and fatigue.
  • Hair loss.

Less common side effects may include myotoxicity (muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness).

Precautions:

  • Special care is needed in patients with kidney disease, as the drug can affect kidney function.
  • Liver function tests are recommended periodically during the first year of treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness.

Drug Interactions:

Nofiate can interact with other medications, including:

  • Warfarin: It can increase the effects of warfarin, a blood thinner, increasing the risk of bleeding.
  • Antidiabetic drugs: It may improve glucose tolerance and have an additive effect.
  • Cyclosporine: It may increase the risk of kidney problems.
  • HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins): There is an increased risk of rhabdomyolysis (a serious muscle problem) when fibrates like fenofibrate are used with statins, although low-dose statin use with fenofibrate appears to be better tolerated.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Nofiate is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women. It should not be used by breastfeeding mothers.
