Licerin Cream (Permethrin): Advanced Antiparasitic Treatment for Scabies and Lice

Licerin cream contains Permethrin, a powerful topical pyrethroid scabicidal agent. It works by directly targeting the nervous systems of pests like Sarcoptes scabiei (the scabies mite). Permethrin disrupts the sodium channel currents that regulate nerve cell membranes, causing delayed repolarization, which leads to total paralysis and death of the parasites.

Permethrin acts locally; less than 0.5% of the applied dose is absorbed into the bloodstream within the first 48 hours, where it is rapidly broken down by the liver and safely excreted in the urine.

📋 Indications: Eradicating Household Infestations

Licerin cream is indicated for the treatment of scabies and crab lice infestations (pediculosis).

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Crucial Household Rule: Scabies spreads incredibly easily through close physical contact or shared bedding. Even if only one person in the home is showing symptoms, all family members and close contacts must be treated at the exact same time to prevent passing the infestation back and forth.

🥄 Dosage & Age-Based Guidelines

The total amount of cream used depends strictly on the patient's age. The following are standard recommended guidelines per single application:

Patient Age GroupMaximum Amount to Apply
Adults and Children over 12 yearsOne full tube
Children aged 6 to 12 yearsUp to 1/2 of a tube
Children aged 1 to 5 yearsUp to 1/4 of a tube
Infants aged 2 months to 1 yearUp to 1/8 of a tube
Infants under 2 monthsSafety and dosing have not been established

🧼 Proper Application & Administration Protocol

For Permethrin to work effectively, it must be applied correctly and left on the skin long enough to eliminate all mites.

1. Preparation:

  • Ensure the skin is completely clean, cool, and dry before application.

  • ⚠️ Warning:Do not take a hot shower or bath right before applying this cream. Hot water dilates blood vessels, which can increase unwanted systemic absorption into your body and cause the cream to wash out of the microscopic mite burrows.

2. Application Coverage:

  • For Adults and Children over 2 years: Apply the cream to the entire body from the neck down. Rub lightly until it completely disappears. Pay special attention to hidden skin folds, webs between fingers and toes, under the fingernails, axillae (underarms), and the soles of the feet.

  • For Babies and Infants under 2 years: Mites frequently infest the head in infants. Apply the cream to the entire body, plus the face, neck, ears, and scalp. Carefully avoid the delicate areas immediately around the eyes and the mouth.

3. Retention and Reapplication:

  • Leave the cream on the skin undisturbed for at least 8 hours before washing it off in a cool bath or shower.

  • The 8-Hour Rule: If you wash your hands or any other treated body part during the 8-hour window (e.g., after using the restroom or cooking), you must immediately reapply the cream to those washed areas.

  • If required or advised by your physician, a second application may be repeated exactly 7 days later to catch any newly hatched eggs.

🛑 Contraindications & Medication Interactions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if you have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to permethrin, pyrethroids, or any inactive ingredients in the cream.

  • Steroid Avoidance: Do not use topical corticosteroid creams (used for eczema or rashes) right before or during scabies treatment. Steroids suppress local immune responses, which can significantly worsen the scabies infestation and make it harder to cure.

  • Staff Protection: Healthcare workers or family members who routinely apply this medication to others may want to wear gloves to avoid localized skin irritation.

⚠️ Side Effects, Warnings & Precautions

  • Temporary Exacerbation: Scabies infestations naturally cause intense itching (pruritus), swelling (edema), and redness (erythema). Applying Licerin cream may temporarily make these allergy-like symptoms worse as the mites die off. This is a common reaction and does not mean the treatment is failing.

  • Immediate Sensations: Some individuals may experience mild burning, stinging, or tingling shortly after rubbing in the cream.

  • Eye Safety: Avoid any contact with the eyes. If the cream accidentally gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with cool, clean water immediately.

🤰 Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: There are no specific, large-scale studies in pregnant women. It should only be used during pregnancy under direct medical supervision.

  • Lactation: It is unknown if permethrin passes into human breast milk. Due to the lack of safety data, it should not be used by nursing mothers.

📦 Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place, safely protected from direct light.

  • Keep completely out of the reach and sight of children.
