Presentation: Each tablet contains Oxcarbazepine BP 600 mg. Available in strips.
Indications: Leptal is indicated for the treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization. It is suitable for use as monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy in adults and in children of 6 years and older.
Dosage and Administration: Leptal should be taken orally and can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed with a sufficient amount of liquid. The dosage should be individualized according to the patient's condition and response.
In patients with impaired renal function, dosage adjustments are recommended based on creatinine clearance. In elderly patients, a lower starting dose of 300 mg once daily is recommended, with slower titration.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, diplopia (double vision), nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and ataxia (uncoordinated movements). Less common side effects include tremor, blurred vision, hyponatremia (low sodium levels), and rash. Rarely, serious skin reactions, angioedema, and hepatic disorders may occur.
Precautions: Leptal is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to oxcarbazepine or eslicarbazepine. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of hyponatremia, cardiac conduction problems, renal impairment, or hepatic impairment. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception as Leptal may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Leptal can cause dizziness and drowsiness, so patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. Monitor serum sodium levels in patients at risk of hyponatremia.
Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
