Laxocon (Sodium Picosulfate): A Stimulant Laxative
Laxocon contains Sodium Picosulfate, a stimulant laxative that belongs to the triarylmethane group. It is indicated for the treatment of constipation of any etiology, including prolonged and recurrent constipation, and for bowel clearance before medical procedures such as surgery or radiological investigations. Its action is local to the colon, where it stimulates nerve endings to promote defecation.
How Laxocon Works (Pharmacology)
Sodium Picosulfate is a prodrug that is activated in the colon:
- Activation: After oral administration, it is activated by bacteria in the colon.
- Stimulates Peristalsis: The active form then stimulates the nerve endings in the intestinal wall, leading to colonic peristalsis (muscle contractions).
- Increases Water & Electrolytes: It also promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the colon, which softens the stool and reduces transit time.
- Promotes Defecation: The combined effect of increased motility and softened stool stimulates defecation and helps to restore the natural "call to stool."
Key Indications & Benefits
Laxocon is indicated for:
- Constipation of any etiology.
- Relief from prolonged and recurrent constipation.
- Bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth, or radiological investigations.
Dosage & Administration
Laxocon is for oral administration and should be taken at night to produce an effect the following morning. It is recommended to start with the lowest dose and adjust as needed, but the maximum daily dose should not be exceeded. Always consult a registered physician for specific dosage instructions.
- Adults and Children over 10 years: 5-10 mg per day.
- Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 mg per day.
- Children aged 1 month to 4 years (Oral Solution): 0.25 ml/kg body weight per day.
Important Considerations & Warnings
It is crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Laxocon.
Contraindications:

- Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions and syncope (fainting).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: While there are no reports of damaging effects, use should be avoided during the first trimester.

Precautions & Warnings:
- Prolonged Use: Prolonged and excessive use can lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance and hypokalemia.
- Alcoholism: The concentrated oral solution is harmful for individuals suffering from alcoholism.
- Special Populations: Caution should be exercised in pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.
Drug Interactions:
- Diuretics or Adrenocorticosteroids: Concomitant use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance if excessive doses are taken.
- Antibiotics: Concurrent administration of antibiotics may reduce the laxative action of Laxocon.
Overdose Effects
- Chronic overdosage: May cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, and renal calculi.
