Presentation:
Each extended-release tablet contains 50 mg of Lamotrigine BP.
Indications:
Lamitrin ER 50 is used for:
- Epilepsy: Treatment of partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children (above 12 years).
- Bipolar Disorder: Maintenance therapy to prevent mood episodes (depression, mania).
Dosage and Administration:
- Epilepsy (Adults & Children ≥12 years):
- Initial dose: 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks.
- Maintenance dose: 100–200 mg once daily (max 500 mg/day).
- Bipolar Disorder:
- Initial dose: 25 mg once daily, gradually increased to 100–200 mg/day.
- Swallow whole – do not crush or chew.
- Take with or without food.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Dizziness, headache, drowsiness
- Nausea, vomiting, blurred vision
- Skin rash (may indicate serious allergic reaction – stop and consult doctor immediately).
- Insomnia, tremors, joint pain.
Precautions:
- Serious skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome) – discontinue at first sign of rash.
- Risk of suicidal thoughts (monitor mood changes, especially in epilepsy/bipolar patients).
- Avoid abrupt withdrawal (may increase seizures).
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:
- Consult doctor (may harm fetus; passes into breast milk).
- Liver/kidney impairment: Dose adjustment required.
Storage:
- Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from light.
