Strength: Available in 2 mg tablets.
Indications:
- Epilepsy:
- Adjunctive therapy in patients aged 2 years and older for partial-onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
- Monotherapy in patients aged 16 years and older with partial-onset seizures who are switching from other antiepileptic drugs.
- Bipolar Disorder: Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults (18 years and older) to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes (depression, mania, hypomania, mixed episodes).
Dosage and Administration:
- Dosage must be individualized and titrated gradually based on the specific condition, other medications being taken, and patient response.
- Lamitrin tablets can be swallowed whole, chewed, or dispersed in water.
- When starting Lamitrin, the dose is usually very low and increased slowly over several weeks to months to reduce the risk of a serious rash.
- It can be taken with or without food.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to lamotrigine or any of the ingredients in the formulation.
Side Effects:
- Common: Dizziness, headache, blurred vision, double vision, unsteadiness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, rash.
- Serious: Severe skin rashes (including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis), blood disorders, liver problems, aseptic meningitis, suicidal thoughts or actions.
Precautions:
- Serious Skin Rashes: Discontinue Lamitrin at the first sign of a rash, unless the rash is clearly not drug-related.
- Blood Dyscrasias: Monitor for signs of anemia, unexpected infection, or bleeding.
- Suicidal Behavior and Ideation: Monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual changes in mood or behavior.
- Aseptic Meningitis: Monitor for signs of meningitis.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment; dosage adjustment may be needed.
- Lamitrin may cause dizziness and drowsiness, affecting the ability to drive or operate machinery.
- Avoid abrupt discontinuation of Lamitrin due to the risk of increased seizure frequency or withdrawal symptoms.
- Drug interactions are possible, especially with other antiepileptic drugs (like valproate, carbamazepine, phenytoin), hormonal contraceptives, and certain other medications. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
- Lactation: Lamotrigine passes into breast milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue breastfeeding or the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.
Storage:
- Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children.
