Gabarol 150 Capsule

Generic Name: Pregabalin

Manufacturer: ACI Limited

Strength: Available in 150 mg capsules.

Indications:

  • Neuropathic Pain:
    • Associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
    • Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
    • Associated with spinal cord injury. 
  • Adjunctive therapy: For the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients 1 month of age and older.1 
  • Fibromyalgia: For the management of fibromyalgia.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Dosage should be individualized and prescribed by a physician.
  • The dose range is 150 to 600 mg per day, given in two or three divided doses.
  • Neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy: The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg/day. Dosing should begin at 150 mg/day and may be increased to 300 mg/day within 1 week based on efficacy and tolerability. 
  • Postherpetic neuralgia: The recommended dose2 is 150 to 300 mg/day. Dosing should begin at 150 mg/day and may be increased to 300 mg/day within 1 week based on efficacy and tolerability. Some patients may require doses up to 600 mg/day.
  • Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures: The recommended total daily dose is 150 to 600 mg/day. Dosing should begin at 150 mg/day (75 mg twice daily) and may be increased based on individual patient response and tolerability.
  • Fibromyalgia: The recommended dose is 300 to 450 mg/day. Dosing should begin at 150 mg/day and may be increased to 300 mg/day within 1 week based on efficacy and tolerability. Patients not experiencing sufficient benefit with 300 mg/day may be further increased to 450 mg/day.
  • Gabarol capsules can be taken with or without food.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped.3 

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to pregabalin or any of the excipients.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Dizziness, somnolence, dry mouth, edema, blurred vision, weight gain, difficulty with concentration/attention.
  • Less Common: Increased appetite, euphoria, confusion, irritability, ataxia, fatigue.
  • Serious: Angioedema (swelling of the throat, head, and neck), hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., hives, dyspnea, wheezing), suicidal thoughts or behavior, respiratory depression (when used with CNS depressants or in patients with respiratory impairment).

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of angioedema.
  • Pregabalin may cause dizziness and somnolence and impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing heart failure.
  • May cause peripheral edema.
  • Increased seizure frequency may occur if Gabarol is rapidly discontinued. It should be withdrawn gradually over a minimum of 1 week.
  • Monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual changes in mood or behavior.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustment is recommended.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • Lactation: Pregabalin is excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.4 

Storage:

  • Store below 30°C.
  • Protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
