Fixpro contains Cefixime, an orally active, third-generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. It exerts a powerful bactericidal effect by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. Fixpro is exceptionally stable against beta-lactamase enzymes, making it highly effective against many bacterial strains that have developed resistance to penicillins and standard cephalosporins.
Fixpro is indicated for treating acute infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms:
Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI): Such as middle ear infections (otitis media) and cases where the bacteria are suspected to be resistant to common antibiotics.
Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as acute bronchitis.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including bladder inflammation (cystitis), urethral infections (cystourethritis), and kidney infections (pyelonephritis).
Typhoid Fever: Effectively treats enteric or typhoid fever caused by common pathogens.
Fixpro has an oral absorption rate of about 40% to 50%, which is not significantly altered by food. The standard treatment course is 7 days, but it may be extended up to 14 days under a physician's guidance.
Standard Dose:200 mg to 400 mg daily, depending on the infection's severity.
Administration: This can be taken either as a single daily dose or split into two divided doses.
Standard Daily Regimen:8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses.
General Suspension Volumes (Based on age):
6 months to 1 year: 3.75 ml daily.
1 to 4 years: 5 ml daily.
5 to 10 years: 10 ml daily.
Typhoid Regimen:5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for a duration of 10 to 14 days.
Note: Safety and efficacy have not been established for infants under 6 months old.
Creatinine Clearance $\ge$ 20 ml/min: Normal adult dosing schedule applies.
Creatinine Clearance < 20 ml/min: Do not exceed 200 mg once daily. This strict limit also applies to patients on chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis.
Cross-Allergenicity Warning: Patients with a known hypersensitivity to penicillin must use Fixpro with extreme caution. Partial cross-allergenicity exists between penicillins and cephalosporins, and severe reactions (including life-threatening anaphylaxis) can occur in both drug classes.
Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea: Broad-spectrum antibiotics like Fixpro can alter normal colon flora, permitting an overgrowth of Clostridium difficile. If severe or persistent diarrhea develops, look out for symptoms of Pseudomembranous Colitis and notify your doctor immediately.
Contraindications: Strictly contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Anticoagulant Interaction: Fixpro may increase prothrombin time (blood thinning). Enhanced monitoring is critical for patients currently undergoing anticoagulant therapy (such as Warfarin).
Pregnancy: There are no adequate, well-controlled human studies. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly essential and explicitly prescribed by a physician.
Lactation: It is unknown if Cefixime is excreted into breast milk. Exercise caution and seek medical consultation before nursing.
