Fenofex (Fexofenadine): Quick Guide

What it does: Fenofex is a non-drowsy antihistamine that treats symptoms of allergies and hives. It's effective for both seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps with sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and itching/hives on the skin.

How it works: Fenofex blocks the effects of histamine, a natural substance released during allergic reactions. By binding to histamine receptors, it prevents them from triggering symptoms like itching and inflammation. It's designed not to cross into the brain, so it avoids the sedative effects common with older antihistamines.

How to use it:

• For Adults & Children (12+): The usual dose is 60 mg twice a day, or a single dose of 120 mg or 180 mg.
• For Children (6-11): 30 mg twice a day, or 60 mg once daily.
• For Children (2-11): 5 ml (30 mg) suspension twice a day.
• For Infants (6 months to <2 years): 2.5 ml (15 mg) suspension twice a day.

• Kidney Issues: The dosage may need to be reduced for people with kidney problems.

   

Important points to remember:

• Drug Interactions: Avoid taking antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium) within 2 hours of Fenofex, as they can reduce its effectiveness.
• Contraindications: Do not use if you are allergic to fexofenadine or any of its ingredients.
• Side Effects: The most common side effects are mild, such as headaches, drowsiness, and nausea.
• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: It's generally recommended to avoid Fenofex unless your doctor says it's absolutely necessary.

• Special Populations: Use with caution in older adults and those with liver or kidney issues.
