Indications

Benzac is indicated for the topical treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It can be used in combination with other acne treatments, such as retinoic acid products, antibiotics, and preparations containing sulfur or salicylic acid.

Pharmacology

Acne vulgaris is caused by inflammation in the pilosebaceous glands. Benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient in Benzac, works by releasing free radicals from its peroxide bond. These radicals interfere with bacterial proteins, ultimately leading to the death of Propionibacterium acnes, a key bacteria involved in acne. This process also helps reduce the amount of keratin and sebum around hair follicles. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide can increase the turnover rate of skin cells, which helps in the peeling of the skin and the breakdown of comedones (whiteheads and blackheads).

Dosage & Administration

Shake the bottle well before each use. It is recommended to start by washing the affected areas with Benzac once a day during the first week. After that, the frequency can be increased to twice a day, as tolerated. To use, wet the skin, apply the wash, work up a full lather, and then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. The frequency of use should be adjusted based on the patient's clinical response. The cap should be closed tightly after use. The safety and effectiveness in children under 12 have not been established.

Interaction

No interactions with other topical medications are known. However, products with desquamative (peeling), irritant, or drying effects should not be used at the same time as Benzac gel.

Contraindications

Benzac is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide.

Side Effects

Allergic contact dermatitis and skin dryness have been reported. If excessive scaling, redness (erythema), or swelling (edema) occurs, the use of Benzac should be stopped, and appropriate therapy should be started. Cool compresses can help to resolve these adverse effects more quickly. After the reaction clears, a reduced dosage schedule may be resumed if the reaction was not due to an allergy.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This is a Pregnancy Category C drug. Animal reproductive studies have not been conducted. It is not known if benzoyl peroxide can cause fetal harm or affect reproductive capacity. Therefore, it should be used by a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. It is also not known if the drug is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when it is administered to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

  • For external use only.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the area thoroughly with water.
  • Benzac may cause discoloration of colored materials, including fabric and hair.
  • Patients should avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use a sunscreen.
  • If severe irritation develops, stop using the product and consult a physician.
