Barbit Elixir (50ml)

Presentation:

Each 5 ml of elixir typically contains Phenobarbital [strength, e.g., 20 mg].1 Available in bottles of 50 ml.

Indications:

Barbit Elixir (Phenobarbital) is a barbiturate medication primarily used for:

• Seizure Disorders: Control of certain types of seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) and partial seizures.  
• Sedation: To help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.  
• Hypnotic: To induce sleep, although it is generally not the first-line treatment for insomnia due to the risk of dependence and side effects.  

Dosage and Administration:

• Dosage must be highly individualized by the treating physician based on the patient's age, weight, medical condition, and response to therapy.
• The elixir formulation allows for easier dose adjustments, especially in children.
• It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely regarding the dose and frequency of administration.
• Phenobarbital is typically taken orally.  
• The timing of doses will depend on the condition being treated (e.g., once daily at bedtime for seizures, or as needed for sedation).

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Lethargy
• Impaired coordination and balance  
• Slurred speech
• Memory problems  
• Confusion

Precautions:

• Phenobarbital can significantly impair mental and physical abilities required for driving or operating machinery. Avoid these activities until you know how the medication affects you.
• Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Barbit Elixir, as it can intensify the sedative effects and increase the risk of respiratory depression.  
• Barbiturates can be habit-forming and lead to dependence. Do not increase the dose or frequency of use without your doctor's instructions.
• Abrupt discontinuation of Phenobarbital can cause serious withdrawal symptoms, including seizures. The dosage should be tapered gradually under close medical supervision.
• The safety of Phenobarbital during pregnancy has not been fully established. It can cross the placenta and may affect the fetus.²⁰ Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
• Phenobarbital passes into breast milk and may cause sedation and feeding difficulties in the nursing infant. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medication.
