Ascova 60ml Syrup contains Doxophylline INNas its active ingredient. Each 5 ml of the syrup contains 100 mg of Doxophylline. It is manufactured by Labaid Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications:

Ascova (Doxophylline) is used to treat:

• Asthma  
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)  
• Bronchospasm  
• Pulmonary disease with a spastic bronchial component  

It is a bronchodilator that helps to relax the smooth muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.  

Dosage and Administration:

For children (above 3 years of age), the recommended dosage of Doxophylline is 12 mg/kg daily, divided into 2 doses.

For Ascova Syrup (100 mg/5 ml):

• Children (6-12 years): 6-9 mg/kg body weight twice daily. For a child weighing 10 kg, the dose would be 3 ml (60 mg) twice daily.
• Children (>12 years): 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) twice daily.
• Adults: 20 ml (4 teaspoonfuls) 2-3 times daily.

The syrup should be taken orally. Always follow the physician's prescription for the correct dosage and duration of treatment based on the individual's condition and response.

Side Effects:

Patients treated with xanthine derivatives like Doxophylline may experience:

• Nausea  
• Vomiting  
• Epigastric pain  
• Headache  
• Irritability  
• Insomnia
• Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)  
• Extrasystoles (extra heartbeats)  
• Tachypnea (rapid breathing)  
• In rare cases, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) or albuminuria (protein in the urine) may occur.

In case of overdose, severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizures may occur.

Precautions:

• Ascova should not be administered together with other xanthine derivatives.
• Limit the consumption of beverages and food containing caffeine while using this medicine.
• Caution should be exercised when administering Ascova together with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs.
• The clearance of xanthine derivatives may be reduced by certain drugs like erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, propranolol, and anti-flu vaccine, potentially increasing blood levels of Doxophylline.
• The clearance of xanthine derivatives may be increased by phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and smoking, potentially requiring higher doses of Doxophylline.
• Caution should be taken in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, in the elderly, in patients with severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic cor pulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and in those with renal impairment.  
• It should be used with caution in patients with congestive heart failure, as the clearance of the drug is considerably slower in these patients.  

Contraindications:

Ascova (Doxophylline) is contraindicated in individuals with:

• Known hypersensitivity to Doxophylline or other xanthine derivatives.
• Acute myocardial infarction.
• Hypotension (low blood pressure).  
• Lactation.

Use in Pregnancy:

There is limited experience with Doxophylline in pregnant humans. It should only be given to pregnant women if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Storage:

Store below 30°C, away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
