Alice contains Ivermectin, a high-affinity anthelmintic medication. It works by selectively binding to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This increases cell membrane permeability, leading to hyperpolarization, paralysis, and the ultimate death of the parasite.
Alice is indicated for the treatment of various parasitic infestations:
Strongyloidiasis: Intestinal tract infections caused by the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis.
Onchocerciasis (River Blindness): Systemic infections caused by the parasite Onchocerca volvulus.
Filariasis: Broad-spectrum treatment for lymphatic parasitic worm infestations.
Ectoparasitic Infestations: Highly effective against Scabies and Head lice.
Crucial Instruction: For parasitic infections, tablets must be taken on an empty stomach with water.
Pediatric Warning: Safety and efficacy have not been established for children weighing less than 15 kg.
Designed to provide roughly 200 mcg/kg of body weight:
15–24 kg: 3 mg
25–35 kg: 6 mg
36–50 kg: 9 mg
51–65 kg: 12 mg
66–79 kg: 15 mg
>80 kg: 200 mcg/kg
Note: Follow-up stool examinations should be conducted to verify complete eradication.
Designed to provide roughly 150 mcg/kg of body weight, typically repeated every 12 months (or as short as 3 months for individual retreatment):
15–25 kg: 3 mg
26–44 kg: 6 mg
45–64 kg: 9 mg
65–84 kg: 12 mg
>85 kg: 150 mcg/kg
Prophylaxis Dose: Take the weight-appropriate single dose on Day 1 and repeat the exact same dose on Day 7.
COVID-19 Positive Regimen (As detailed in text): 2 tablets of Ivermectin 6 mg (12 mg total) once daily for 5 days.
Mazzotti Reaction: Patients treated for onchocerciasis may experience mild to severe allergic and inflammatory responses (postural hypotension, fever, rash, lymph node tenderness) due to the rapid death of the microfilariae.
Loa loa Co-infection: Heavily co-infected patients run a rare risk of developing serious or fatal encephalopathy (brain dysfunction), presenting as confusion, lethargy, back pain, or difficulty walking.
Blood Thinners: Rare post-marketing reports indicate an increased INR when co-administered with Warfarin. Monitor bleeding times closely.
Pregnancy: Classified as Category C. Safety has not been firmly established, so Alice should not be used during pregnancy.
Lactation: Excreted in low concentrations in human milk. Nursing mothers should only take this if the risk of delaying treatment outweighs the potential risk to the newborn.
