Desotem (Desloratadine): A Non-Sedating Antihistamine
Â
Desotem contains Desloratadine, a non-sedating, long-acting histamine antagonist. It is the major active metabolite of loratadine. Desloratadine works by selectively blocking H1-receptors and inhibiting histamine release from mast cells. It is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Â
How Desotem Works (Pharmacology)
Â
Desloratadine's mechanism is based on blocking histamine and its release:
- H1-Receptor Antagonist: It acts as a selective antagonist of the H1-histamine receptor, preventing histamine from causing allergic symptoms like sneezing, itching, and congestion.
- Inhibits Histamine Release: It also helps to prevent the release of histamine from mast cells, which are key cells in the allergic response.
