Solas (Mebendazole): A Broad-Spectrum Anthelmintic

Solas contains Mebendazole, a synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic medication. It is indicated for the treatment of various intestinal worm infections, including threadworms, whipworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Mebendazole works by interfering with the worms' ability to use glucose, which ultimately leads to their death.

How Solas Works (Pharmacology)

Mebendazole's mechanism of action targets the internal structure and energy source of the worms:

  • Inhibits Microtubule Formation: It inhibits the formation of the worms' microtubules, which are essential for their cellular structure and function.
  • Depletes Glucose: This action causes the worms to become depleted of glucose, their primary energy source. The lack of energy and structural integrity leads to the death of the worm.
  • Absorption: After oral administration, about 2-10% of the dose is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Half-life: The elimination half-life is 2.8 to 9 hours.

Key Indications & Benefits

Solas is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Threadworms
  • Whipworms
  • Roundworms
  • Hookworms

Dosage & Administration

The dosage of Solas varies depending on the type of worm infection. The medication is for adults and children over 2 years of age. Always consult a registered physician for specific dosage instructions.

  • Threadworms: A single dose of 100 mg (or 1 teaspoonful). A second dose may be needed after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs.
  • Whipworms, Roundworms, and Hookworms: 100 mg (or 1 teaspoonful) twice daily for 3 days.
  • Reinfection: If reinfection occurs, a second dose may be necessary after 2 weeks.

Important Considerations & Warnings

It is crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Solas.

Contraindications:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any of its components.

Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Abdominal pain and diarrhea, especially in cases of massive infection.
  • Hypersensitivity: Rare cases of rash, urticaria, and angioedema.
  • Central Nervous System: Very rare cases of convulsions.
  • Hematologic: Neutropenia and agranulocytosis.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Mebendazole is not recommended for pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, due to potential risks to the fetus.
  • Lactation: It is unknown whether Mebendazole is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administering it to a nursing mother.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Prolonged Therapy: Periodic assessment of organ system functions (including hematopoietic and hepatic) is advisable during prolonged therapy.
  • Patient Information: Patients should be informed about the potential risk to the fetus during pregnancy and the importance of cleanliness to prevent reinfection.
  • Pediatric Use: Use in children under two years of age should be based on a careful consideration of the relative benefit/risk.

Drug Interactions:

  • Cimetidine: Preliminary evidence suggests that cimetidine may inhibit Mebendazole's metabolism, leading to an increase in its plasma concentration.

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms: Accidental overdosage may cause gastrointestinal complaints lasting up to a few hours.
  • Treatment: In case of overdosage, vomiting and purging should be induced.

Storage Conditions
